People in a backwoods Southern town are shocked when the body of a recently deceased banker, the richest and most despised man in the county, disappears from the local graveyard then is offered back to the grieving widow for a hefty ransom. The body snatchers, a hardscrabble family of moonshiners, are led by 'Sleepy' Dinmore, a man desperate to escape poverty and his sister Stella Jo, intent on buying an up-to-date artificial leg. The novel, alternately humorous, macabre and suspenseful reaches a climax with local lawmen out to shoot Sleepy on sight as he attempts to collect the ransom and help his family start a new life.

This is a believable adventure story (well, more believable than most adventure stories) featuring folks I don’t meet very often. They are down-and-out people who were living from paycheck to paycheck when there was paying work in the area, and now live on unemployment that’s running out. They’re young, have limited options in life, and make bad choices; and they have only each other to help them through.The author’s style took a little getting used to; his sentence structure sometimes drew my attention to itself rather than the story, but that’s my only complaint. I highly recommend this book.

I read the other reviews and cannot be as articulate. I'm not a writer, I'm a reader. I work 50-60 hours a week in corporate America. What I loved about this book was the escape it provided. I can't say I can relate fully to any of these characters and that's what kept me coming back for more. Each time I put the book down, I would wonder "what on earth is that Stella Jo going to do next?". Did I like her or loathe her? I can't decide. John Osier has a very creative writing style and unique characters. I have no idea where he comes up with the names or if he has pets named Sleepy, Poot and Dent, but I enjoyed how Osier took his time revealing the depth of each character to us. Good Read if you need to take a break from reading business books like "The Tipping Point" for the 5th time.
Mississippi is a Blues Culture. Many people do not appreciate the authenticity that the appellation implies. And authenticity is the basic criterion of any art. You cannot fake the Blues. It is its own special place, and though we would like to think its epicenter is somewhere near Red's Lounge in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the truth is that it is a dimensional relm, not necessarily geographic. I do not like labels because they are an impediment to imagination. John Osier's novel is labeled as Southern Gothic or Southern Grotesque. These terms are as useless to the understanding of a literary work as are the archaic distinctions of Realism and Naturalism. Mean Moon Blues is authentic. The movement of the story is a Blues riff in itself.
The next time you listen to Howling Wolf, Sonny Terry, Muddy Waters, or Mark "Mule Man" Massey, ask yourself,"What did it take?" Then think of Sleepy.

This is one of those books that creep up on you and before you know it you're on page 200 and it's 0100 in the morning. The characters are hardscrabble and riveting and I had to know what they would do next! The genesis for Sleepy, Poot, Stella Jo and Granny might have migrated directly from the characters of Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County to the fictitious town of Dreg. They don't burn down any barns; they do something more bizarre, they hold a corpse for ransom. I would categorize this story as being Southern Gothic but even the Goths would have fled from the town of Dreg in horror. The story in "Mean Moon Blues" moves fast and hits hard!
Osier's Dinmores make the Joads in Steinbeck's "Grapes Of Wrath" look like Rockefellers by comparison; at least the Joads had a working truck to take them out of Oklahoma...the Dinmore`s truck is stove up in a ditch and good for nothing more than sleeping off an occasional hangover. These people need to get the hell out of the town of Dreg or starve to death once the greens run out!
Altogether I thoroughly enjoyed "Mean Moon Blues" and would love to see Hollywood get ahold of this one (hopefully Hollywood wouldn't mangle it up beyond all recognition).
It gets the five star Elvis rating for being a great read!
Okay, here's the thing; I can't stop thinking about these people even when I lay the book down to do something else. In fact, I was just playing poker online and stopped to write this because I was wondering what was going to happen next... and ultimately. The guy [Osier] sets up such an intriguing premise that the reader wants to get through the thing to get to the resolution; on the other hand, the reader does not want to turn loose of these characters. Don't get me wrong; I don't want to live next door to these people, but I am glad they exist and I genuinely care what happens to them because I believe they are utterly real. Going back to the book now...
Finished the book. THIS IS A REALLY GREAT BOOK! It had me from, "Hey, Bubba." These are characters you will think about and wonder about long after you close the book. There is injustice here. There is great passion here on the smallest scale. There is here a terrible angst for survival and a sublime glorying in mere temporary respite. These folks don't dream of yachts and mansions; they dream of terrycloth towels and new teeth. The trotline giveth and the trotline taketh away. There are characters here that I will never forget... much to my own discomfort in some cases. Read this book; you will not be disappointed.
